We meet the Icelandic President
This International Women’s Day, we are proud to share that our Female Explorer Tree is now being enjoyed and celebrated by the female President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir. Growing up with a female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, for 16 years was a huge inspiration, along with my incredible aunt, Berglind Eyjólfsdóttir, who dedicated 42 years to the Reykjavík Police, most of them as a detective, always pushing for greater equality for women in her field. A true symbol of strength, resilience, and adventure—just like the remarkable women who inspire us every day.
This particular tree artwork was first inspired by an article Kristjana read in National Geographic, and is a tribute to the female explorers who documented the botanical world before the advent of photography. At a time when men did most of the travelling and exploration, these women defied the norms and expectations of their age and pursued their passion for nature and adventure.
This tree symbolises the spirit of exploration, adventure and discovery that has motivated many women throughout history, and reminds us of the beauty and diversity of the world and the need to protect and preserve it for the future. Within its boughs, discover the badges of honour that celebrate some of the most visionary female adventurers who have left their indelible mark on the world.
