Peer into these arresting portholes and watch a vibrantly coloured pair of carp carried forward by the impending swell of Hokusai’s celebrated wave, their elaborate fins metamorphosing into butterfly wings to propel them from sea to sky. These mysterious creatures are evocative of the myths and legends of the orient, and invite the imagination to create a new species, yet to be discovered. Many of the ancient tales stem from the Chinese legend of the Dragon’s Gate; the koi carp that swam upstream and leapt over the Dragon’s Gate were transformed into the revered dragon, thus symbolising perseverance, courage and accomplishment.
