The story behind the artwork
A wonderful long, and light map, which takes you on a celestial voyage over and through the sea, reflecting the iridescence of the spectacular Northern Lights. Kristjana recalls as a child the long, magical Icelandic nights where it felt like the aurora was going to scoop you from the ground and take you high into the sky, to a place of clarity and stillness.
The territorial waters of Iceland were once home to an enormously rich fish population, the trade being a strong part of the island’s heritage and a personal memory for Kristjana. Atlantic cod, flat fish, pollock, haddock and lobster dance beneath the bows of grand boats that compete for their icy catch.
Terrestrial Icelandic stalwarts are given hero status - the sturdy horse is resplendent in feathers, and displays his endurance aboard a Viking long-boat. The immense distances travelled through all weathers and the deepest snow, mark these strong and steady creatures as truly Icelandic. The deceivingly white form of the eponymous polar bear patrols the land, taking rightful ownership of this extraordinary natural environment. Icelandic moths and gulls fly overhead, dodging the sparkling ice crystals that deflect the light while the sun is low, producing the magnificent rainbow effect of the aurora.
